Arion Fur
The grass on this render was created using different Arion Fur modifiers.

 

Arion Fur is a 3ds Max modifier that adds short fibers on your object. Arion Fur embeds a basic physics simulation to give the fibers a natural look depending on the simulated weight, based on various settings such as Length, Root and Tip radiuses, Stiffness and Gravity.

Primitive

Material: Defines the name of the material to be used for the fur fibers. It can be independent from the growth object's material, but the fur material must be applied to an object in the scene, even if outside of the camera view. Arion Fur supports any kind of Arion material setting and effect.

Segments: Defines how many knots (vertices) the fiber will be divided into along its length

Root: Defines the fiber's width at its base (root) in centimeters. This setting is affected by the simulated dynamics and modify the Stiffness and Gravity effects on the fibers.

Tip: Defines the fiber's with at its tip in centimeters. This setting is affected by the simulated dynamics and modify the Stiffness and Gravity effects on the fibers. It might be necessary to adjust those settings to keep the fibers 'in shape'.

Tubular fibers: When selected, this option (default) will generate tubular primitives with perfect smoothness along its circumference.

Flat fibers: When selected, this option will generate flat ribbon-like primitives.

Distribution

QRN seed: QRN stands for Quasi Random Number. This option changes the fibers random distribution on the growth object's surface while keeping the same number of fibers.

Count: Defines the number of fibers that will be generated on render-time on the growth object's surface. This parameter can be mapped to define more or less dense areas.

Growth

Length (cm): Defines the length of the fibers in centimeters. This setting can be mapped.

Variation (%): Introduces a random variation of the fibers Length within the boundaries of the defined percentage. The variation will happen with the defined Length as middle-point.

Direction (%): Defines the amount of direction deviation of each fibers compared to their original direction. The original direction is defined by a combination of the surface normals and the Gravity effect. This setting can be mapped.

Variation (%): Introduces a random variation of the fibers Direction within the boundaries of the defined percentage. The variaiton will happen with the defined Direction as middle-point.

Stiffness (%): Defines the rigidity of the fibers. This effect of this parameter is highly dependent on the fiber's Length, Root and Tip widths and the Gravity parameters. This setting can be mapped.

Variation (%): Introduces a random variation of the fibers Stiffness within the boundaries of the defined percentage. The variation will happen with the defined Stiffness as middle-point.

Gravity (%): Defines how much the simulated Gravity affects the fibers bending. This setting is highly dependent on other settings such as Length, Root and Tip thickness or Stiffness. When this parameter is set to 0, the fibers will have no direction to follow and will not bend in any way. This setting can be mapped.

Icon

 Beware to not use too high Gravity value, or the fibers may go down too much and penetrate inside the growth object, as depicted on the last image of the above slide.

 

Variation (%): Introduces a random variation of the Gravity effect on the fibers within the boundaries of the defined gravity. The variation will happen with the defined Gravity as middle-point.

Viewport

Count: Defines the number of fibers that will be displayed in the viewport. The checkbox enables or disables the display completely. Be reasonable with the amount of preview fibers displayed in the viewport as it can quickly slow down the refresh rate.
