The IBL main properties rollout lets you define the general rendering parameters for the environment lighting rendering.

SamplingLets you select the sampling method for the environment. Available options are: Stochastic and Importance SamplingWhile stochastic is perfect for plain color environments, when using HDR bitmaps as light source, it is highly recommended to switch to the Importance Sampling mode
Flip

Lets you flip the environment map in various ways:

  • None: No flip is used at all, the environment map is rendered as is
  • Horizontal: Flips the environment map horizontally
  • Vertical: Flips the environment map vertically
  • Both: Flips the environment map horizontally and vertically
Flips are usually not necessary as environment maps are made to be used directly without the need for any edit, but sometimes you won't see the environment map directly but you see it in the reflection, and you want the text or some other recognizable shape to be rendered flipped

The IBL base lets you select a custom color or bitmap to be used as emission's color

The Backplate lets you use a specific image or photograph as backplate (background). When this is activated, the lighting will not change but if the environment is directly visible, the camera will see this image instead of the IBL base's color or texture.

Available options are:

  • Spherical mapping: Wraps the backplate texture around a sphere placed at infinity in the scene
  • Screen mapping: Projects the backplate texture as is, docking it to the framebuffer's size in width or height depending the render resolution. Some cropping may then occur if the texture and framebuffer ratios differs.
